Maggie Luck
Always Strive Toward Your Goals
Margaret “Maggie” Luck began her education at FM in 1978. She graduated with the class of 1983. A native of Johnstown, Maggie chose FM because it was convenient and affordable. She was paying for her education on her own.
Maggie started by taking a few classes in Criminal Justice with the goal of becoming a probation officer. Like many college students, Maggie changed her mind and considered a nursing degree before settling on Liberal Arts: General Studies. This field allowed her to combine her interests in criminal justice and the medical field. Maggie’s eventual interest Medical Legal Death Investigation was not even heard of at that time.
Maggie continued her education by attending various criminal justice and medical seminars. She attended a Death Investigators Course at the St. Louis University School of Medicine. She traveled to Las Vegas for CSI training. She has also taken EMT training through FM and has maintained her certification for the past 16 years. Over the past 20 years, Maggie has continued to attend FM courses related to the medical field, criminal justice, the elderly and end of life matters.
Today, Maggie works full-time as Lifeline Coordinator for Nathan Littauer Hospital and serves as a Fulton County Coroner. Recently, Maggie passed the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators (ABMDI) Registry examination for professional death investigators.
“I don’t know if this will effect any career change for me, but I do know I am more confident in myself and my job. This was my way of putting everything I ever learned in one place,” says Maggie. “As an elected coroner, I’m a part-time death investigator. If I decide to leave office, having my AMBDI certification will allow me to continue to be a death investigator.”
Maggie emphasizes that being AMBDI certified has opened up a new line of communication for her. “I now make contact with death investigators and medical examiners from all over the United States,” she says. “I can compare it to my time at FM. Attending FM opened the doors to meeting new people, acquiring new skills, and gave me the chance to communicate and explore a new avenue. FM made me feel like I belong and that nothing was impossible to accomplish no matter what your life schedule is.”
Maggie is committed to professional organizations and to the community. This past September, she was elected to the New York State Association of County Coroners & Medical Examiner Board of Directors. She serves on the Fulton County Traffic Safety Board, the Fulton County EMS Council, the Fulton County Sexual Abuse Investigation Team and the Fulton-Montgomery-Hamilton County Critical Incident Stress Debriefing Team. She is a member of Hamilton Fulton Montgomery Business and Professional Women, the St. Monica Chapter of the Eastern Star, the Loyal Order of the Women of the Moose and is first vice president of the Women’s Republican Club of Fulton County.
“FM has given many local leaders their start,” said Acting President John E. Jablonski. “Maggie Luck is one of them. She has benefited from the community’s investment FM. Now the community is seeing a return on that investment. We’re proud that she is one of our alumna.”
