Jackie Snyder - FM Professors Make Great Impact on Her
Jackie grew up in Gloversville, NY and said she chose to attend FM because of her extremely close relationship with her family as well as not wanting to travel far for school. She didn’t feel that it was necessary to have to travel miles just to get an education. “FM was a great place for me; it helped me to get acclimated with the college lifestyle and slowly ease into the environment,” she says.
An Adolescent Education major with a concentration in English, Jackie says there were three professors at FM that made a great impact on her life. The first is Ellie Fosmire. “Mrs. Fosmire was my advisor and put up with me for two years,"says Jackie. “She was always there when I needed advice or just wanted to talk.”
The second is Sheryl Seppa. “I had Mrs. Seppa for two classes and she is one of the best teachers that I know,” says Jackie. “She is very passionate about her work and can reach any student. She gives great insight into the real world of teaching. After taking her classes I feel much more prepared to be a teacher than ever before.”
The third is Lena Andersson. Jackie had Ms. Andersson for two classes, both of which were during her sophomore year at FM. “In the fall I took American Literature I and in the Spring American Literature II,” she tells us. “The first semester I really struggled in her class and I didn’t seem to really get into the groove of things until midterm, but when I finally did I gained a new appreciation for literature. The second semester went flawlessly. I now had a love for poetry and all things English that I had never felt before. Ms. Andersson was such a great teacher. Her classes challenged me, and made me realize that I am very capable. She truly cares about each and every one of her students, and wants them to succeed. Due to Ms. Andersson’s ability to impart her love of English to others I decided to major in English.”
Jackie says that what she liked most about FM was that it very easily integrated into her present lifestyle. She didn’t have to put her life on hold to get an education. “It allowed me to learn and also to continue my life outside of school,” she says. “I was able to continue working and still earn my degree. Its locality and its convenience are what I liked best.”
Jackie was a member of Phi Theta Kappa and graduated with a scholarship via PTK.
Currently, she is furthering her education at Russell Sage in Troy, NY. “I am presently a junior and am earning my bachelors in English,” says Jackie. “FM has been very successful in preparing me for the work ahead. Without FM as a stepping stool I don’t know if I would be ready for the classes that Sage has to offer.”
Although Jackie’s career goals are presently undecided, she is certain that she wants to be a teacher. However, the difficulty for her lies in deciding what she would like to teach, either Special Education or English.
Jackie lives at home with her family and commutes to school. “I have the world’s greatest support system,” she says. “My family has always backed me in all my endeavors and for that I am grateful.”
