The Transfer Process
EARLY PLANNING IS THE KEY TO TRANSFER SUCCESS!!
1. Determine Your Career Goals - IDENTIFYING A CAREER PATH
- Career planning and transfer planning are tied together.
- The FMCC career center located in the Student Development Center can help explore possible career paths that are directly related to your interests, skills and values.
2. Choose a Major
- Deciding on a major is easier once you have determined your career goals. Ask yourself what is the appropriate major at the four-year college to prepare me for my chosen career path?
- Also, am I in the correct major at FMCC that will maximize the number of credits in the four-year major I have chosen?
- Most colleges and universities will accept 60-68 credits from a two-year college
3. Make Appropriate Course Selections
- Review FMCC articulation agreements with other colleges. Meet with your advisor to select courses that will most likely transfer.
4. Researching Colleges/Universities
- The FMCC Career Lab contains information regarding colleges and universities; we have college catalogs, view books and videos. The Internet is also a good resource to begin your search.
- *When researching four-year colleges, you will need to determine whether the college/university has your intended major. Also do not allow tuition cost to drive your search process in the beginning.
5. Narrow Down Choices
- Once you have researched transfer colleges, it is important to narrow down your choices. While one particular college may be your ideal choice, it is important to have a back up plan.
- *Visit the campus of any college you are considering, talk with students, faculty and admissions counselors. Get on their mailing lists.
6. Finalize Your Plans
- When it is time to apply, make sure you know the application deadlines for each college. You will need official transcripts from the FMCC Registrars
- Office as well as letters of recommendation.
